FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS
Where are you based? Do you travel?
We are based in Elkhart, Indiana. Heck yea we travel! All those fees are included in our prices. We have our passports ready to go for worldwide travel. Photography has taken us all over, and we’re pumped to see new places with you!
We aren’t sure on a location yet. Can you help?
For sure! Emily prides herself on being a resource to couples in many forms. She’ll team up with you to find the perfect location. It’s part of her role as your guide. She has a huge list of spots she’s saved over the years + good knowledge on what to look for in a location (even if it’s on the other side of the world). A big part of a smooth elopement/wedding day is preparation + organization.
Talk to me about your editing style.
We value details and want each photo to be its best. That’s why Emily hand-edits each image you receive. We don’t outsource editing to anyone, ever. We may not have the fastest turnaround, but we take pride in our distinct style + high-level of consistency. While editing your images, Emily highly values: accurate coloring, symmetry, well-lit/sharp faces, cool tones (preserving blues/greens), true whites, flattering skin, minimal distractions, and logical cropping.
How long have you been doing photography?
We shot our first wedding together in July 2011.
Is your business insured + how do you protect your photos?
We have business insurance through State Farm, which includes a 1 million liability policy + insurance on all our gear. We shoot on two memory cards simultaneously. After your wedding, all RAW images are backed-up in at least three separate physical locations (one being a fireproof/waterproof safe). We know these memories mean the world to you, and we do all that we can to protect them.
How do we book you?
We are pumped you love our work! Head to the contact page to fill out the form to check availability + get the ball rolling. The sooner the better! For weddings, we require a $1,000 non-refundable retainer upon signing the contract. This will secure your date with us. The remaining balance is due 30 days before your day.
Who will photograph the wedding?
Emily will join you for your elopement or intimate wedding. For traditional weddings (50+ people) you will get both Jim + Emily Hary as your photographers. Being a husband-wife team has become vital to our business; while Emily is busy documenting all the details + ladies getting ready, Jim is capturing the (usually humorous) moments with the guys. During the ceremony, Emily is usually perched up front, while Jim is in the back getting the wide shots of your gorgeous venue. At the reception, we float around and tag team important events. If for some reason Jim is unable to be the second shooter for your wedding, a suitable + talented replacement photographer will be found to cover for him.
How will we receive our photos?
You will receive all of your images in their finished state. We give you a mixture of color + black and white photos. All the high-resolution digital JPEG files will be delivered to you through a private online gallery walnut USB drive (both for weddings). There is no limit to the number of photographs you will receive from your wedding day (it will probably be more than you’re thinking). We hand-pick all the best images, by getting rid of any duplicates, misfires, or images with unflattering expressions or poor lighting.
Can we share our photos on social media?
Chyeah! We require that you provide visible credit for each post made online. This small business thrives on people being able to see + know it’s our work! We also kindly ask that you do not crop, edit, or alter the images in any way. That would be a breech of the contract you will read and sign.
What is the best light to photograph in?
Natural light is always best! We shoot outdoors, and use no special lighting equipment. For weddings, we specifically suggest getting ready in a naturally-lit, bright room with very little clutter. We also highly recommend scheduling in time the hour or two before sunset for alone time and warmly-lit photos of just you two. Let us help you craft a light + photo-informed wedding day timeline! Also, check out our map of hand-picked, unique, and naturally-lit wedding locations!
Do you provide printing rights?
Absolutely. This allows you to print as many photos as you want, as many times as you’d like, without restriction. We still own the copyright to the images, but you will get personal printing rights. Please avoid drug/grocery stores for printing. The (sometimes) weird colors + low quality do not accurately reflect our hard work! We personally recommend MPIX. They have reasonable prices, beautiful print quality, and quick delivery.
Do you take formal family portraits at weddings?
Yes. We collect all the information we need from you before the wedding day. Efficiency is important to us. We recommend no more than 10 family groupings. Family portraits are often the most exhausting part of the day for everyone. We want you and your family to enjoy the reception. Couples are interested in seeing more natural photos rather than posed. That is why there are not many on our site. No worries though, we do them at every wedding.
What happens if you are ill?
It would take a lot for both of us to miss a wedding. Luckily that has not happened! But if this were to happen to one or both of us, we would reach out to local photographers to cover for us. If for some reason, there is no suitable replacement photographer found, your wedding package would be refunded in full (including the retainer).
What kind of gear do you shoot with?
2 x Canon 5d Mark III bodies (and a back-up body). Canon 35mm 1.4, Canon 85mm 1.4, Canon 24mm 1.4, and a Canon 24-70mm 2.8.
Are you guys married?
Yep! And it’s the best thing ever. We tied the knot under a huge Catalpa tree back in May 2015.
